GILI TRAWANGAN, LOMBOK INDONESIA

Gili Trawangan, the most popular among the three Gili’s. Just kick back and enjoy the sun, nightly beach parties and sea. The main stripe is full of accommodations, restaurants, and dive shops.
If you are seeking a quieter place to stay there are bungalows in the north. This Island is also known as "Party Island", where mostly young European find themselves "Lost In Paradise"

If you come during the Peak Season (July-August, December-January), most places are full and prices are doubled. An advanced reservation is a must.

With spectacular sunrises over Lombok's Mount Rinjani volcano and breathtaking sunsets that illuminate Bali's towering Mount Agung volcano, together with warm hospitality of the Gili Trawangan residents, it's not surprising that most visitors end up staying longer than originally plan.

ccommodation on Gili Trawangan
Most of the accommodation centrally located on south east of Gili Trawangan. A few new establishments of bungalows with a better facilities are now available. Places in the front (beach line) are more expensive. The upmarket accommodation is no longer dominated by Villa Ombak and Villa Almarik. There are many new quality boutique resorts are now available (see places to stay, updated recently). Gili Trawangan is more developed than other Gilis for the last few years. There are also a few places to stay around the north and south west coast in more quiet atmosphere.

Activities
Snorkeling off-the-shore, sunbathing, swimming, or join any dive trips with any dive operators which colored the lines. There are quality dive schools available to cater the needs of tourists, offering complete range of PADI courses, as well as Fun Dives for those already certified.

By night, the waterfront comes to life as various foreign and locally restaurants and bars start to fire up, with fresh snapper, grouper and tuna, cooked over charcoal flames, readily available.

TURTLE HATCHERY
A local initiative was set up to help the turtle population around Gili Trawangan. The poachers are paid for their find and the turtles are re-buried and kept under surveillance. Once they hatch, the baby green and hawksbill turtles are placed in a tank and left to grow until they are approx. 6 months old when they are big enough to fend for themselves, and are released into the sea.

The project still relies purely on donations by locals and tourists and has grown bigger and bigger over the years.

BIO-ROCK PROJECT
In 2004, Vila Ombak Diving Academy began a project to encourage the re-growth of the coral using a method called Bio-rock. The process involves using a safe low-voltage current that is applied though the sea water. The electric current attracts the minerals in the seawater to a steel structure where they grow into limestone very similar to coral reefs.

In 2006, after the success of the original project, all the dive operators on the island came together to construct more Biorock structures. The 14 structures can be found in the shallower waters (5-8m) at different points just in front of each dive shop.

GILI ECO TRUST
Gili Eco Trust was set up to protect the coral reefs around the island against destructive fishing practices.

A one-time donation of Rp 40,000 charged to the guest by dive centres on Gili Trawangan to pay fisherman to stop using fishing methods that are damaging to the reefs. Funds are also used for beach cleaning, rubbish management and monitoring.

Line fishing, spear fishing and surface nets are permitted as these methods are not harmful to the reefs and the eco-system.

Nightlife
Although the island once had a reputation among the back-packing community as wicked party destination, many establishments which once laid claim to hosting wild dance parties today trade on their reputations.

By a tradition that continuous today, only one establishment per night can play music and host dance party until 4 am. Of the seven weekly venues hosting parties, the one most anticipated by tourists and locals alike are the funk house and hard music parties with local DJ's in spinning disks.

If wild dance parties are not to your liking, many restaurants and bars, including the Tirnanog - Irish bar, provide a range of more sedate and social gathering point for Al fresco dinning and drinking by the water's edge.

Mount Rinjani - Lombok Indonesia

Rinjani National Park

The national park extends over an area of 41,330 ha. with the surrounding protected forest covering 1,500 ha. Community based activities are conducted in conjunction with Rinjani Trek Center in Senaru. Mount Rinjani and Lake Segara Anak located in the north of Lombok 85 kilometers from Mataram.

Mt. Rinjani is the second highest peak in Indonesia standing at a majestic 3726 meters. For the people of Lombok Sasak and Balinese alike, treat this mountain as a sacred place. They consider the Gods live at the summit of the mountain. One of the large craters called Lake Segara anak at 2000 meter above sea level is the destination of many pilgrims who make the annual trek up the steep slopes in order to place offerings to the Gods in the lake it's self.

This magnificent crater now holds a new and active volcano, Mt. Baru Jari which appeared on this century. On the north side of the lake is a hot spring ( one of 4 Segara anak hot springs found there) which is believe by local to cure disease.

A model for echo tourism in Indonesia, It is trully an unforgetable experience to climb such impressive mountain as Rinjani and the 2 trek expeditions that offered and the spectacular scenery were contributing factors to Tinjani National Park winning the National Geographic World Tourism Award in 2004.

Starting points for such a trek can begin at Senaru in the North or from Sembalun in the East, this two or three days trek attacks Rinjani from West with a descent to awesome crater lake before before again climbing up and out and on to the summit.

The faster more direct route climbing to the Rinjani summit, which is popular for those tourist that don't wish to spend several days on this expedition, can be attempted from Sembalun Climbing up Rinjani's Eastern slopes. This trip does not visit the lake Segara Anak but is it still a breathtaking  and magic experience. The Rinjani Summit Climbing can do for one night 2 days from Sembalun.

If you want more comfortable climbing to Rinjani is it possible also to combine your trip with stay in Gili Island or Senggigi, our recommendation take the trekking to Rinjani first and do Relaxing at one of the Gili islands or Senggigi to recovery from attempts the mount and pamper your self at world class Spas offer by the accommodations.

Mount Rinjani Recent activity
Rinjani erupted three times on May 22rd 2010 with activity continuing until early on May 23th. According to the volcano's official monitoring agency, ash from Mount Barujari has been reported as rising up to two km into the atmosphere and has damaged crops. The volcano is not currently threatening villagers. Lava flowed into the caldera lake, pushing its temperature up from 21°C to 35°C, while smoke spread 12 km.

In February 2010 observers at the Mount Rinjani Observation Post located 12.5 km (4000 feet) NE of Rinjani saw one whitish-colored plume that rose 100 metres (328 ft) from the volcano. Dense whitish plumes (and possibly brown) rose 500 metres (1,640 ft) - 900 metres (2,953 ft) in March 2010 on 26 occasions and as high as 1,500 metres (4,921 ft) in April 2010 on 41 occasions. Plumes seen on 1 and 2 May 2010 were "chocolate" in color and rose a maximum height of 1,600 metres (5,249 ft). From February 2010 through April 2010 seismicity decreased, although the maximum amplitude of earthquakes increased. CVGHM (Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation) also noted that ash eruptions and ejected incandescent material fell within Rinjani caldera, but some ash was blown out of the caldera.

The activity in early 2010 centred about Gunung Barujari a post-caldera cone that lies within the Rinjani's caldera lake of Segara Anak. The Volcanological Survey of Indonesia reported on 1 May 2010, that a column of smoke was observed rising from mount Rinjani "issuing eruptions 1300-1600 metres tall with thick brown color and strong pressure". Their report Evaluasi Kegiatan mount Rinjani of 4 May also stated that on 1 May 2010 at 10:00 four events of Explosive Earthquake were recorded with a maximum amplitude of 6-53 mm and 110 seconds long earthquake, earthquake tremor events with a maximum amplitude of 1 mm and 55 second long duration, 15 Local Tectonic earthquake events and two events of tectonic earthquake. The Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) Alert Level was raised to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) on 2 May 2010. Level 1 is "Normal" and Level 2 is "Advisory" with an Aviation Alert color of Yellow-Advisory. Based on analysis of satellite imagery, the Darwin VAAC (Volcanic Ash Advisory Center) reported that on 5 May a possible ash plume from Rinjani rose to an altitude of 5.5 km (18,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted 150 km NW. The plume was not seen in imagery about six hours later. CVGHM (Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation) advised the VAAC that intermittent activity could produce ash plumes to 1.5 km (5,000 ft) above the caldera.

On 27 April 2009 Gunung Barujari became active with activity continuing through to May 2009. The mountain was closed at that time as the eruptions intensified with plumes of smoke and ash as high as 8,000 m (26,250 ft). A Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI):2 rating was issued for the activity between 2 May 2009 and 20 December 2009. The activity during this period was described as having the characteristics: of central vent eruption, flank (excentric) vent, explosive eruption and lava flows.
